General Project Information

The Precinct is a major development aimed at enhancing the physical and mental wellbeing of our students by providing state-of-the-art sport and fitness facilities.

The precinct is a transformative investment designed to enhance students' physical and mental wellbeing, improve learning outcomes, and create a world-class facility that will serve current and future generations of MLC students.

The current Physical Education Centre, built in the 1980s, no longer meets the needs of our students. This new precinct will provide modern facilities that support a wide range of physical activities, promoting health, wellbeing, and academic success.

The precinct will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an indoor sports centre with multiple courts, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, fitness studios, athletics facilities, and enhanced outdoor spaces.

This development is part of MLC’s ongoing commitment to integrating wellbeing with education. The new precinct is designed to enhance students' physical activity, which is proven to improve both academic performance and mental health.

Timeline and Construction

Preparation for the precinct’s construction will begin in late December 2024. This initial stage involves preparing the site to ensure a smooth start to the project.

The construction itself will be carried out in two carefully planned phases.

  • Phase 1 (2025–Mid-2026): Development of the new Aquatic Centre, a portion of the outdoor courts, a new athletics hub and enhanced Junior School 3–6 playground.
  • Phase 2 (Mid-2026–End 2027): Completion of the Indoor Sports Centre, underground car park, and outdoor courts.

This phased approach minimises disruption and ensures the continued delivery of our PE and sport programs throughout the build.

While we aim to minimise disruptions, some impact is inevitable. We are planning the construction in phases to ensure that key facilities remain available and that the impact on daily activities is minimised.

The construction of the project will happen in two main stages.

Phase one will comprise the construction of the Aquatics Centre, part of the underground car park, and much of the outdoor space. This will commence at the start of 2025 and be completed during mid 2026. This will enable the current PEC to remain in use for our students during the construction of the Aquatics Centre.

Phase two involves the demolition of the existing PEC, construction of the balance of the underground car park, completion of the outdoor courts, and building of the Indoor Sports Centre. This will only commence once phase one is completed and operational. Phase two is expected to be completed towards the end of 2027.

Impact on Students & Programs

We are committed to minimising disruptions for students throughout this process. The College has carefully planned to maintain PE and sport activities, leveraging a mix of on-campus facilities and select off-site locations to provide continuity with little interruption.

Yes, students will have full access to PE and sports programs during construction, including the use of alternative facilities if necessary.

Community & Environment

We will work closely with Kapitol Group to minimise disruption to local residents, including managing noise, traffic, and environmental impacts. The project also includes increased on-site parking, which will alleviate local parking concerns in the future.

Yes, the precinct’s facilities will be made available to the broader community, including other local schools and sporting bodies, similar to how our current facilities are used

The precinct is designed with sustainability in mind, including zero gas usage, solar panels, rainwater capture, and energy-efficient systems to minimise our environmental impact.

Funding & Costs

The project will be funded through a combination of current reserves, philanthropic contributions, and some borrowings. This approach ensures that the College can continue its long-term sustainable development without a significant impact on school fees.

We do not anticipate any spike in fees to cover this investment. School fees are set annually based on operational costs, and this project is part of MLC’s long-term development plan, which is carefully managed to avoid undue financial strain on families.

Communication & Updates

Regular updates will be provided through this microsite, College e-newsletters, myMLCfamily (parent portal) and community information sessions. We are committed to transparency and keeping everyone informed throughout the development.

In addition, local residents can opt into a dedicated email on key updates during the development, including temporary changes such as heightened noise, traffic adjustments, or significant construction milestones,
