Valedictory Speech

OCC President - Alex O'Keefe (1999)

Good evening,

I’m Alex O’Keefe, and I am the President of the MLC Old Collegians’ Club. It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, I was sitting right where you are tonight, on the brink of an exciting new chapter— excited, nervous, and completely clueless about what lay ahead.

Firstly, I want to take a moment to celebrate the Class of 2024. Today, you graduate from MLC, however by the end of this evening, you’ve earned your place as an Old Collegian and joined a lifelong community. As you step into the world, you’ll discover that our MLC community is everywhere—it may be your boss at your first job, someone you meet while traveling, or even a casual conversation with a stranger. Or if you are like me you may even be lucky enough to have an former MLC girl as your mother-in-law.

MLC Alumnae are everywhere and scattered across the globe, they are like kindred spirits, here to lift and guide each other. It’s a subtle yet powerful bond that connects us all.

The MLC Old Collegians’ Club (OCC) is your family, it is a network of over 20,000 members. No matter where life takes you, you’ll find fellow Old Collegians cheering you on.

I prefer to call us not a “club” but a sisterhood—here as you navigate the twists and turns of life, the OCC will be your safety net and your launchpad. Celebrating your achievements but also the incredible spirit of being a former MLC girl.

It was a joy to see Ellie McLean from the Class of 2023 at the school this morning with her coffee van. Ellie’s presence is a testament to the lasting connections and camaraderie we foster.

Now, despite what the name might suggest, we’re not just a bunch of “old ladies.” Some of you may remember Alice O’Connor and Siena McRae from the Class of 2023. They are just a few of the amazing volunteers on our council, which spans from the graduating years of 1991 to 2023. We are thrilled to invite you, the Class of 2024, to join us. It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain skills, forge connections, and create memories that last a lifetime.

The OCC has many great events such as our International Women’s Day Cocktail evening in March. We also offer a mentoring program that connects you with experienced Old Collegians. Plus, our Val Kerr Fellowship Grant is available for those who want to pursue a not-for-profit venture—who knows? Your next big idea could change the world!

I honestly can’t wait to see where life takes you and I look forward to seeing some of you at upcoming OCC events in the years ahead.

To the Class of 2024! Goodbye and Good Luck to you!
