Exciting vision for MLC’s future: The Physical Education and Sport Precinct

At MLC, we believe that the wellbeing and development of our students are central to their success in life. With that vision in mind, we are excited to share the plans of our new Physical Education and Sport Precinct, a space designed to inspire, engage, and elevate the experiences of every student.

The new precinct embodies MLC’s commitment to integrating learning and wellbeing. Research underscores the profound impact of physical activity on mental health, confidence, and academic performance. This state-of-the-art precinct goes beyond traditional sports facilities. It represents our commitment to fostering a lifelong love of physical activity, enhancing mental and physical wellbeing, and providing a nurturing environment where every girl can thrive.

“This project is about creating spaces that empower our students, fostering their physical and mental wellbeing alongside academic achievement,” said Principal Julia Shea. “It’s about more than just sports—it’s about building resilience, confidence, and lifelong health.”

Designed by Architectus, a leading architectural firm specialising in educational and community-focused environments, the precinct will begin construction in January 2025 with builders Kapitol Group.

Modern Facilities for Future Generations

The need for the precinct was identified in MLC’s current masterplan and developed through extensive consultation with students, parents, staff, alumnae, and experts over the last two years. The precinct will include:

  • A state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre featuring an Olympic-sized pool, a dedicated Learn-to-Swim pool, and diving facilities.
  • An Indoor Sports Centre with multifunction courts, a strength and conditioning room, and an expanded gymnasium.
  • An Athletics Hub and outdoor courts for various activities.
  • An underground car park to enhance campus accessibility.
  • Spectator viewing areas, breakout spaces, meeting rooms, café facilities, and versatile venues for activities, events, and celebrations, fostering connection and collaboration within the MLC community.

“This precinct reflects MLC’s tradition of visionary campus development. It ensures today’s and tomorrow’s students benefit from spaces that prioritise physical and mental wellbeing alongside academic excellence,” said Board Chair Lucia Cade.

Construction Timeline

The construction has been carefully planned in two phases to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff while allowing key facilities, such as the Aquatic Centre, to become operational as early as possible.

  • Phase 1 (2025–Mid-2026): Construction of the Aquatic Centre, Athletics Hub, outdoor courts, and an enhanced Junior School playground.
  • Phase 2 (Mid-2026–End 2027): Completion of the Indoor Sports Centre, additional outdoor courts, and underground car park.

Why Now?

Research highlights the critical importance of physical activity for young people, particularly teenage girls.

  • Physical activity improves mental health, reducing stress and anxiety while boosting self-esteem and confidence.
  • Active students demonstrate better academic outcomes, with enhanced concentration and memory.
  • Alarmingly, by age 17, 90% of girls do not meet recommended activity levels, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' National Health Survey, which highlights the critical need for targeted interventions.
  • To address these challenges, MLC introduced a Health and Fitness program offering activities such as Pilates and spin classes. Over 420 students participate weekly, demonstrating the demand for diverse and inclusive options.

The new precinct will build on this foundation, providing facilities that inspire students of all interests to stay active, fostering positive lifelong habits.
