MLC Celebrates a Milestone for Sport and Wellbeing

Excitement and gratitude filled the air at Methodist Ladies' College (MLC) on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, as the community gathered to mark a significant milestone—the official Turning of the Sod for the new Physical Education and Sport Precinct.

The event brought together key supporters, including students, staff, donors, and project partners, to mark the beginning of construction and recognise the generosity and collaboration that have made this vision a reality.

Honouring the Past, Building the Future

The ceremony commenced with a powerful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Pallyan Hunter, son of Murrundindi, Ngurungaeta of the Wurundjeri, with Pallyan's son Kuburu providing a moving performance on the didgeridoo. This meaningful tribute acknowledged the land’s traditional custodians and symbolised a fresh start for this vital development.

A Vision for Excellence in Sport and Wellbeing

Principal Julia Shea described the precinct as a once-in-a-generation investment in student health, confidence, and opportunity.

"This precinct is more than just bricks and mortar—it represents our unwavering commitment to providing world-class facilities that inspire students to thrive, compete, and build lifelong healthy habits. Every contribution and partnership has played a vital role in bringing this ambitious vision to life, and today is a testament to what we can achieve together."

Julia also extended heartfelt thanks to those who played a critical role in making this vision a reality, including the MLC Board, past and present members of the Project Control Group (PCG), the dedicated staff and students whose insights have helped shape the precinct's design and project partners Kapitol, Neoscape, and Architectus.

Board Chair Lucia Cade reinforced the importance of continued investment in the project and acknowledged the generosity of Co-Patrons Elizabeth and James Tatoulis AM, the MLC Foundation, and other donors.

"We express heartfelt gratitude to all of our significant donors present today. Your generosity and support have been instrumental in bringing us this far, and we are deeply appreciative of your commitment to this transformative development. While we have made great strides, there is still much work ahead. Your leadership in inspiring others to contribute will be crucial in ensuring the precinct is realised as a state-of-the-art facility that meets the needs of both current and future generations without compromise. Together, we can reach our goal and create a lasting legacy."

Students Celebrate the Future of Sport at MLC

The most powerful voices of the day came from MLC students, whose reflections reinforced the precinct’s importance.

Senior Prefect Caroline Healy spoke about the need for inclusive, high-quality sporting spaces that allow all students to participate, whether in elite competition or for fun and wellbeing.

"This precinct will create new opportunities for every MLC student—whether they are elite athletes or simply looking for a place to move, connect, and have fun."

Wellbeing Prefect Amelie Rheinberger and Sport Prefect Bella Murchie spoke of the broader benefits the precinct will bring, from mental wellbeing to fostering lifelong friendships.

"MLC has always championed balance, and this development will ensure every girl has the space and support she needs to prioritise both her health and her learning," Amelie noted.

Turning the Sod: A Symbolic Moment

A highlight of the event was the ceremonial Turning of the Sod, where Principal Julia Shea, Board Chair Lucia Cade, key supporters, and representatives from Kapitol, Neoscape, and Architectus took part in breaking ground using Indigenous digging sticks crafted by Wurundjeri artist Alex Kerr.

What’s Next?

With construction now underway, excitement is building for the precinct’s completion. The new facilities will empower students to thrive in sport and wellbeing for generations to come.

The MLC Physical Education and Sport Precinct is more than just a facility—it is a statement of commitment, a celebration of community, and a promise of opportunity for every MLC student.
