MLC student makes a heartfelt contribution to childhood cancer

November 27th, 2024

This term, the MLC community gathered to support Maya as she made a deeply personal and inspiring gesture in honour of her friend, Abbey.

In a moving moment witnessed by friends, family, and supporters, including Maya’s own family, Maya cut off 46 cm of her hair—hair she had been growing for 10 years since finishing her own cancer treatment. Her donation will be made into a wig for a child affected by cancer, a powerful tribute to those still fighting the disease.

Maya and Abbey’s friendship began when they were both undergoing cancer treatment together as young children. Reflecting on their bond, Maya shared that, “Abbey showed me that even the smallest of girls can be the bravest.” Maya’s decision to cut her hair was a heartfelt tribute to Abbey, who passed away from childhood cancer, and a way to keep her memory alive through an act of kindness.

Abbey’s family, including her mother, sister, and brother, along with the president of the Abbey Solo Foundation, were present to witness this special moment. Maya’s friends also rallied around her, creating a “Go Maya” poster where students and staff shared heartfelt messages of support.

A special thank you goes to Bianca from Frankie Grace Salon in Thornbury, who generously donated her time to style Maya’s new bob. Maya now proudly wears her shorter hair, knowing it will bring comfort to someone else in need.

In addition to her hair donation, Maya’s fundraising efforts surpassed her target, raising over $6,400 for the Abbey Solo Foundation. These funds will go towards helping more families affected by childhood cancer, a cause close to Maya’s heart.

We are immensely proud of Maya for her courage, compassion, and dedication. Her act of generosity has touched the entire MLC community, and we thank everyone who came together to support such a meaningful cause.
